Glacier Changes in the Susitna Basin, Alaska, USA, (1951-2015) using GIS and Remote Sensing Methods

چکیده
The Susitna River draining from the highly glacierized Central Alaska Range has repeatedly been considered a potential hydro-power source in recent decades, raising questions about the effect of glacier changes on the basin’s river runoff. We determine changes in the glacier area (1951–2010), elevation (1951–2010, 1951–2005 and 2005–2010), equilibrium line altitude (ELA, 1999–2015), and accumulation area ratio (AAR, 1999–2015) of the basin’s five largest glaciers covering 587 km2 (2010). We use the Landsat time series, as well as digital elevation models (DEMs) from 1951 (United States Geological Survey (USGS) aerial imagery), 2005 (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer, ASTER), and 2010 (airborne interferometric synthetic aperture radar, IfSAR). The glaciers lost an area of 128 ± 15 km2 (16%) between 1951 and 2010. The mean ELA was located at 1745 ± 88 m a.s.l. during 1999–2015. The glacier’s annual ELAs do not show any significant trends. We found a glacier-wide elevation change of −0.41 ± 0.07 m yr−1 for the period 1951–2005 and −1.20 ± 0.25 m yr−1 for 2005–2010. The results indicate that the glaciers are in a state of retreat and thinning, and have been losing mass at an accelerated rate in recent years. The interpretation of the thickness changes is complicated by the glaciers’ surge cycles.

Glacier mapping from multi-temporal optical remote sensing data within the Brahmaputra river basin
Glacier distribution and glacier changes were investigated in the Upper Brahmaputra River Basin using remote sensing and GIS in order to determine the influence of melting glaciers on the long-term runoff of the Brahmaputra River (EU-project BRAHMATINN). Current glacier distribution and glacier changes since the 1970/80s were mapped using multi-temporal optical remote sensing data from the Land...
متن کاملEstimating runoff precipitation and providing land use maps and agriculture levels in different periods of time, using remote sensing technology in Roud Zard basin area
Today, remote sensing technology is used in all scientific and informing fields around the world, and it has achieved to very satisfying results. In the present study, by using remote sensing technology and application of satellite photographs the coefficient of curve number was estimated with high accuracy and pick discharge of the flood was calculated with a good accuracy. In this study, i...
متن کاملIdentification and characterization of alpine subglacial lakes using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR): Brady Glacier, Alaska, USA
The temporary storage and subsequent release of water at glacial margins can cause severe flooding in downstream areas and substantially impact glacier dynamics. Alpine subglacial lakes may not be identified until they become subaerially exposed or release a jökulhlaup. We use interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) to identify and characterize three dynamic alpine subglacial lakes of ...
متن کاملDetection of Land Use Changes for Thirty Years Using Remote Sensing and GIS (Case Study: Ardestan Area)
Due to the increase of changes in the land uses mainly resulting from humaninterferences, monitoring the changes and evaluating their trend and environmental effectsfor future planning and management are essential. In the present study, an attempt is madeto observe the changes which had occurred in Ardestan area during a period of 30 yearsusing some satellite images. Different kinds of data for...
متن کاملTsunami Vulnerability Mapping Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques: A Case Study of Kollam District, Kerala, India
Tsunamis are caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a sea. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions, landslides, glacier calvings, meteorite impacts and other disturbances above or below water have the potential to generate a tsunami. The coastal areas of Kollam district, the present study area was seriously affected by the catastr...
